By staying with the same look for decades, the American LaFrance Company developed a continuity in the appearance of their vehicles. A fire house could have a new and an old American LaFrance engine, and the decoration would match, though the bodies were different.

     The restoration below is of a 1936 San Francisco engine. Fire apparatus in San Francisco for the past 100 years have been painted this very dark maroon. At a parade, muster or large fire, one city's unique colored trucks would stand out from the rest.
